Begin with the person

A person may retain the practice that produced a skill while losing the institution's certification. The practical consequence depends on what the certification controls: admission, employment, trust or the right to perform a particular task. Calling both objects “qualification” can hide the difference.

Read the explanation

The skill remains. The door can still close. gives an accessible route into that separation. Its question is not whether institutions matter. It is which part of an outcome rests on personal capacity and which part rests on a decision someone else can change.

Read the opening

The opening note introduces the book’s question. The complete cases are in the book.

The next question

Think of a form of recognition you rely on. If the issuing institution changed its position, what could you still demonstrate independently, and what would require a new permission?
