The release

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an August increase of 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs and an unchanged unemployment rate of 4.1%. June and July payroll changes were revised upward by a combined 55,000. The estimates were released on 4 September. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ↗

Context

One strong release cannot establish the direction of financing conditions. The immediate analytical task is to distinguish the new month from the revisions, then ask whether the interpretation changes when the full vintage is used. The unemployment rate and payroll count also come from different surveys; they should not be treated as interchangeable readings of one instrument.
