Visible blockchain activity is not a direct measure of economic activity

A BIS study shows why aggregation and classification alter the story told by on-chain data.

OPEN VARIABLE. Visible blockchain activity is not a direct measure of economic activity. 2026-09-19. https://www.openvariable.com/latest/stablecoin-measurement

A BIS working paper published on 15 September examines the difficulty of turning public blockchain records into meaningful measures of economic activity. Its examples cover Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron.

The authors identify problems in aggregating transactions, distinguishing meaningful smart-contract activity and comparing uses across blockchains. They find that the same stablecoin can play different roles on different networks. Transaction counts and transfer values therefore require interpretation before they can describe adoption or economic importance.

The implication for comparisons is straightforward: two figures labelled transaction volume may measure different things. A useful comparison needs a common definition of the unit, the transfers included and the handling of technical movements that do not represent a new economic exchange.
