OPEN VARIABLE. AI compresses the time available to respond to cyber threats. 2026-09-19. https://www.openvariable.com/latest/ai-cyber-resilience
A Financial Stability Institute paper published on 9 September examines how advanced AI affects cyber risk in financial services. It describes capabilities that can accelerate vulnerability discovery and multi-step attacks, alongside opportunities to improve defensive detection and response.
The paper identifies shorter remediation windows and dependencies on shared technology providers as important sources of risk. It describes authorities strengthening existing operational-resilience and cyber-risk frameworks as their expectations adapt.
For an institution, the relevant operating question is how quickly detection leads to a decision, a patch and recovery. Buying a more capable tool does not establish that those steps work together. Dependencies on common providers also mean that a problem outside one firm can affect several institutions at once.
